The River of Compassion & Connection

The River of Compassion & Connection: A Prayer for the Well-Being of Our Cousins

This will be a guided meditation where we will bring the collective into a space of flowing compassion. The request for this meditation was made in response to recent world events. In this moment and moments like this, I believe it’s most important to hold onto your own basic goodness. If you feel swept up in anger, fear, sadness or concern, be present with it in the moment and then return to your own goodness. There is so much good that we can all do and if we get swept away by all the negative thoughts and feelings we are likely to miss out on the opportunities to help others and be in a state of loving presence. Keep showing up for your life, your mind and your heart so you can show up for the world. Consider what incentivizes you to lean into anger, fear and distress: what feelings and responsibilities do you avoid, what identity do you get to adopt, what group do you feel aligned with, what beliefs feel proven, do you feel safer inside yourself or do you feel like any impulsive actions you take are more justified? Consider the cost of holding onto distressing feelings against the willingness to allow them to ebb and flow. Consider the fierce engagement of compassion for everyone, not just those we see as victims or agree with. This meditation will include the wish for everyone’s well being - we are all cousins, this is all our family. I look forward to coming together for this - but the real change we can make is in the daily work. Difficult times can be the greatest opportunities to cultivate conviction about loving others, letting go of the illusion of control and practicing always returning to our goodness.
